Saturday, Victoria Day Weekend
Trenton Park, Trenton, NS
The event is free and open to children aged 5 to 15 years. Participants can expect to catch brook trout and are permitted to keep up to five fish. Adults are not allowed to fish in the Park during this event. Prizes are awarded to the children who catch the largest fish. As well, a few tagged trout are put in the pond and any child catching one of these distinctive fish receives a small cash prize. All participants will be eligible for draw prizes. It is a fun event and usually attracts about 300 children for a morning of trout fishing.
February Free Fishing Weekend
Gairloch Lake, Pictou County, NS
Participants can expect to catch brook trout and rainbow trout through the ice. Participants are able to keep two rainbow trout but all speckled trout caught must be released. Prizes are awarded to adults and children for the largest rainbow trout caught. As well, all participants are eligible for draw prizes. The PCRA provides hot and cold drinks, hot dogs and snacks for all Derby participants. The Ice-Fishing Derby is timed to fall on the free-fishing weekend in Nova Scotia and Derby participants do not require a Nova Scotia fishing license to participate.
